Latics 1-1 Eastleigh

11 November 2023

Oldham had to settle for a point at Boundary Park, as Alex Reid’s thunderous shot cancelled out Chris Maguire’s first-half penalty.

Latics had the lion’s share of possession in the opening minutes, but couldn’t create much of note.

Eastleigh controversially took the lead from the penalty spot, leaving Latics trailing going into the break.

Starting alongside Norwood up front, Reid equalised after firing home Kitching’s brilliant shot, to salvage a point for Oldham.

Athletic were in control of the ball for large parts of the opening minutes, with the best chance coming through Hallam Hope, who cut in from the left and took aim at the near post, seeing his shot go just wide.

Eastleigh were awarded a penalty after Hobson was judged to have fouled McCallum inside the area, giving the visitors a huge chance of taking the lead midway through the second-half.

Maguire stepped up and converted from the spot, sending Hudson the wrong way.

Oldham had a good spell of chances towards the end of the first-half, most of which involved Lundstram.

Norwood positioned himself brilliantly to meet his cross, took aim at the goal with his head, but McDonnell between the sticks managed to tip it over.

The second saw Reid nod his cross on for Hope, who looked to bundle the ball over the line, but the goalie, again, managed to push it wide.

Latics needed a goal during the second half, and looked as though a piece of magic from Lundstram would see that happen.

He went past three bodies in the centre of midfield, threading a pass through for Reid, who looked for the far corner from a tight angle, but could only put it wide.

Willoughby was brought on for Hope with thirty minutes to play, giving Latics some fresh legs up top.

Kitching broke free down the left, saw Reid in the centre, picking him out with a cross. Reid wasted no time hitting it first time, firing it into the roof of the net.

With Latics back level, they then looked for a winner.

A great ball was played over the top for Norwood, he controlled it well and struck his shot well, just for an Eastleigh defender to block it.

Shelton and Fondop came on in place of Gardner and Norwood, with just under ten minutes to play.

Oldham had a good chance to win it at the end, Reid flicked the ball on for Fondop who took possession for a few strides before switching it to Kurt.

He didn’t have a huge window to get his shot away, but he did, although it went just wide of the goal.

Micky Mellon’s side will take the point, but will think they could have had all three.

Oldham: Hudson, Kitching, Hogan, Hobson, Lundstram, McGahey, Gardner (Shelton, 82’), Hope (Willoughby, 60’), Freeman, Reid, Norwood (Fondop, 82’).

Subs not used: Langley, Raglan.
