Latics show Steel

4 March 2013

Two goals for Lauren

Oldham Athletic Ladies had an injury time winning goal controversially disallowed leaving them with a second consecutive 2-2 draw, this time against Heyside Angels in the Greater Manchester Women's League, Division One.

Heyside were bottom of the league and had been beaten by double figures in their last three games.

Latics, on the other hand, after a long series of defeats, had been unbeaten in two games so hopes were high that they would secure a third win of the season.

They took the lead after 21 minutes when Lauren Steel ran away from her defender and slotted past the keeper.

Latics were well on top and could have gone further ahead but a Yasmin Deane shot hit both posts before rebounding to the keeper.

They were shocked to concede goals either side of half time when Heyside initially converted a penalty then scored again with a header.

Steel came to the rescue four minutes later with a goal similar to her first strike.

Both sides went for the winner. Latics had multiple chances but the woodwork and poor finishing contrived to keep the scores level.

Then in the 91st minute with the referee ready to blow for time a melee in the Heyside box saw Steel bundle the ball home. As Latics celebrated wildly the referee disallowed the goal for handball.

It was a disappointing result against a team with a minus 96 goal difference but, after a long run of defeats, that's three games without defeat.

Latics will be looking to extend that run to four with a game away to Manchester Rovers at Hough End Playing Fields on Sunday.
