Latics back project to prevent homelessness

  the'INSIDE OUT,’Latics are  backing
tenancy starter packs project.

The projectwas created by charities who work locally to prevent homelessness in Oldham. This was in response to the growing issues many people face when moving into their new homes and having to set up without many of the basic items they need.

.

Through the generosity of local people, £1,300 was raised towards being able to create basic starter packs

The first fund-raising activity was a sponsored 'sleep out' in March 2011 where a group of volunteers from the local charities slept outside overnight.

A number of volunteers slept out for a second time in March 2012 which raised a further £1,750 and volunteers also took part in a bag pack at Tesco's in October 2011 raising £900.

The packs enable vulnerable people to have access to essential items on which to build a base and resettle into the community. A pack of items such as a kettle, crockery, cutlery, towels, bedding or a microwave can make the real difference between a tenancy succeeding and failing.

The group are currently planning a third 'sleep out ' on Thursday, March 21st.

People who benefit from the project are encouraged to give back their time in supporting the project with fundraising activities. This will enable us to make the scheme an on-going fund for vulnerable people in Oldham.

Homelessness is a very difficult transition for those that are affected.

Evidence shows that the strain placed on families and individuals at this time can lead to such things as mental illness, sub-stance abuse, family breakdown and often re-occurring homelessness.

Not only do the starter packs help financially in a time where those involved may literally have nothing, they act as a way into vital support services. Once people become engaged with support services, they have a better chance of sustaining their tenancy and ending the cycle of homelessness.

How can you get involved?

Inside Out are looking for sponsorship (either in kind, or money) for a range of items to be used during the sleep out.  These include:
